What should you really pay attention to with battery storage?
The market for home batteries and battery storage systems is growing exponentially. A positive development – but also a market where a lot is underestimated.
Battery storage nowadays is much more than “just an extra battery”.
A modern battery storage system consists of:
- battery cells,
- inverters,
- software,
- Securities,
- communication protocols,
- slim energy management (EMS),
- high DC power.
It is precisely there that the biggest differences often arise in practice between a good system... and a system that later causes problems.
Not every supplier is automatically a battery specialist
Many installers are excellent at solar panels and electrical engineering. However, battery storage has now become a completely separate field in its own right.
Yet we regularly see systems being sold with the idea:
“We'll just throw that in as well.”
And that's precisely where things often go wrong.
In practice, we see, among other things:
- poorly constructed systems,
- Insufficient communication between battery and inverter.,
- systems without smart energy management,
- limited backup functionality,
- unknown battery brands,
- Poor support,
- closed systems that later prove not to be expandable,
- and suppliers who are dependent on third parties for breakdowns or warranty.
Furthermore, you don't buy a battery storage system just for today, but often for the next 10 to 15 years.
Then support, knowledge and accessibility become at least as important as the battery itself.
You can't judge a book by its cover
What many people don't know is that there's a big difference between:
- the battery cell manufacturer,
- and the manufacturer of the final battery system.
The battery cell is the real heart of the system.
Well-known manufacturers of professional battery cells include:
- BYD
- Calcium
- CATL
- EVE Energy
- LG Energy Solution
- Panasonic
- REPT
- Samsung SDI
However, there are thousands of manufacturers of complete battery units worldwide.
Many systems are produced as so-called “white label”: standard products to which a company name or logo is later applied.
That doesn't have to be wrong – provided quality, documentation, support and traceability are well organised.
And it is precisely there that differences often arise.
Safety is still too often underestimated.
Battery storage works with high DC voltages and large powers.
From around 50 Volts DC, life-threatening situations can arise.
The choice of battery chemistry is also important.
In many situations, we recommend modern LiFePO₄ (LFP) systems due to their high thermal stability and safety.
In some older lithium techniques, such as certain NMC or Li-ion systems, damage or overheating can cause a so-called thermal runaway origin. The battery continues to feed itself with heat and oxygen.
These are the well-known severe lithium fires that regularly make headlines around the world.
LFP systems are chemically much more stable and generally remain safe, even at significantly higher temperatures.
That does not mean that battery storage is without risk. Poor installation, incorrect components, inadequate cooling or a lack of knowledge can still lead to dangerous situations.
That is precisely why:
- a good BMS (Battery Management System),
- a smart EMS (Energy Management System),
- correct security measures,
- and professional installation is absolutely essential.
Smart energy management is becoming increasingly important
A modern home battery is no longer just about storage.
Becoming increasingly important
- dynamic energy tariffs,
- peak shaving,
- network congestion,
- Loading and unloading slimly,
- emergency power supply,
- solar panels,
- heat pumps,
- Charging points,
- Swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, etc.,
- and future expansion.
That is precisely why the software and the EMS system often make the biggest difference between a simple battery… and a smart energy system.
What questions should you ask before making a purchase?
A good supplier will find the following questions normal and logical:
- Which battery cells are used?
- Is this a LiFePO₄ (LFP) system?
- Are the battery cells traceable?
- Which certifications are present?
- How does the system work during a power outage?
- How is fire safety organised?
- Is there an EMS available?
- Can the system handle dynamic energy tariffs?
- Who provides after-sales service and warranty cover?
- Is there Dutch support?
- How close is the contact with the manufacturer?
- Are software updates and spare parts available?
- Is expansion possible later?
- Is the system prepared for future network problems and network congestion?
Vagueness or evasive answers are often an important signal.
No sales pitch, just honest advice
