A positive development \u2013 but also a market where a lot is underestimated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">Battery storage nowadays is much more than \u201cjust an extra battery\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">A modern battery storage system consists of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>battery cells,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inverters,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>software,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Securities,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>communication protocols,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>slim energy management (EMS),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high DC power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4 wp-block-paragraph\">It is precisely there that the biggest differences often arise in practice between a good system... and a system that later causes problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not every supplier is automatically a battery specialist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">Many installers are excellent at solar panels and electrical engineering. However, battery storage has now become a completely separate field in its own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">Yet we regularly see systems being sold with the idea:<br>\u201cWe'll just throw that in as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">And that's precisely where things often go wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, we see, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>poorly constructed systems,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insufficient communication between battery and inverter.,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>systems without smart energy management,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>limited backup functionality,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unknown battery brands,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor support,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>closed systems that later prove not to be expandable,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and suppliers who are dependent on third parties for breakdowns or warranty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, you don't buy a battery storage system just for today, but often for the next 10 to 15 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4 wp-block-paragraph\">Then support, knowledge and accessibility become at least as important as the battery itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You can't judge a book by its cover<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">What many people don't know is that there's a big difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the battery cell manufacturer,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the manufacturer of the final battery system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">The battery cell is the real heart of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3 wp-block-paragraph\">Well-known manufacturers of professional battery cells include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>BYD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calcium<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CATL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EVE Energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LG Energy Solution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Panasonic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>REPT<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Samsung SDI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">However, there are thousands of manufacturers of complete battery units worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">Many systems are produced as so-called \u201cwhite label\u201d: standard products to which a company name or logo is later applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">That doesn't have to be wrong \u2013 provided quality, documentation, support and traceability are well organised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p4 wp-block-paragraph\">And it is precisely there that differences often arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety is still too often underestimated.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">Battery storage works with high DC voltages and large powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">From around 50 Volts DC, life-threatening situations can arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">The choice of battery chemistry is also important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">In many situations, we recommend modern LiFePO\u2084 (LFP) systems due to their high thermal stability and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">In some older lithium techniques, such as certain NMC or Li-ion systems, damage or overheating can cause a so-called <em>thermal runaway<\/em> origin. The battery continues to feed itself with heat and oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">These are the well-known severe lithium fires that regularly make headlines around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">LFP systems are chemically much more stable and generally remain safe, even at significantly higher temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p2 wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean that battery storage is without risk.
